| Diego Guzman I started dancing at the age of 6 by participating in school choreographies of Mexican folklore. At the age of nine, my uncle Ivan showed me the basics of a Latin dance related to salsa called “Cumbia”, furthering my interest in dance. At the age of 13, after moving to the US, I learned the “Bachata”, “Mambo”, “Merengue”, “Punta”, “Salsa”, and various other Latin dances while observing others at family and friends parties. In my senior year of High School, I met Amanda Showell at an after school dance program, where she taught the basics of ballroom dancing. Thanks to Amanda, who invited me to a ballroom dance at the YMCA, I fell in love with the beauty of ballroom dancing. I was amazed by how well coordinated and gracefully couples danced across the floor. After this experience, I acquired a passion to learn ballroom dance. After graduating from high school, I had planned to move back to Mexico for education purposes, but my plans fell through and I decided to further my education in the US. I took a break from ballroom dancing for a couple months during the summer. When I returned to the dance floor, Aggie Belestky, a ballroom instructor from Dancing on the Shore, sparked the idea for me to become a ballroom instructor. Before making a final decision to become an instructor, Amanda offered to hire me as an instructor for Dancing on the Shore and I accepted. Later on, I continued to further my dancing abilities by taking group lessons during the fall of 2009 and, in December of the same year, I choreographed a “Bachata” performance with the help of Genesis Ruiz, for a Dancing on the Shore Showcase. I also did a swing performance choreographed by Amanda Showell. As for now I am looking forward to begin teaching ballroom dancing in the spring of 2010. |
